For centuries, several Native American tribes lived in the area that is now Los Angeles, including the Chumash and Gabrieleños. The Spanish first explored southern California in the 16 th century, though the pueblo that would become Los Angeles wasn’t established until 1781. Los Angeles became a part of Mexico in 1821, when Mexico declared independence from Spain. The United States purchased California from Mexico as part of the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and California became a state in 1850.

The population of Los Angeles grew considerably after railroads connected the city to the rest of the country in 1876. Early in the 20 th century, the burgeoning film industry helped make Los Angeles a great American city. Los Angeles hosted the Summer Olympics in 1932 and 1984, making it one of only seven cities in the world to host the Olympics more than once.

Today, 3,900,000 people live in Los Angeles, and 16,400,000 people live in the greater metropolitan area. The Los Angeles area is well known for its sunny weather and Disneyland, which has seen more visitors than any other theme park. The City of Angels is a world leader in television production and boasts the largest motion picture industry in the world in terms of revenue.
